Electro was first introduced into the Spider-Man universe in The Amazing Spider-Man 9 comic, released in 1964. The original story behind the development of his powers comes from when a burst of lightning hit a power line that the former electrical engineer was repairing. This incident caused a mutation to occur in which he became a walking capacitor for electricity. He sported a look that only comic book characters in the 1960s could really pull off, a skin-tight green and yellow suit with a mask that had lightning bolts jutting out in every direction. Later incarnations have since resigned him to be a little more "with the times" but the green and yellow combination often still remains. His powers primarily include the ability to generate and discharge electricity. He can also absorb electricity from any equipment that uses it, and there have been varying degrees to how much electricity he can hold. This discharging of electricity makes him a deadly foe if his opponent is not prepared, but a properly insulated suit or drenching him in water usually ends with his defeat in the end. In this game, he joins up with Octavious and the rest of the Sinister Six to defeat Spider-Man, an arc that has been done in other iterations of the Sinister Six as mentioned previously. In this version, Electro utilizes exoskeleton gear to help enhance his abilities as well. This was a new take on the villain that is used commonly within the more modern depictions of the character, but it wasn't the first time such an idea was implemented for him. Electro had another big appearance before his iteration on the PlayStation 4, and that was on the big screens in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, released in 2014. In this movie, Electro is played by Jamie Foxx, redesigned from the ground up. In this iteration, Electro gained his powers not from lightning hitting the power line, but from a tank of genetically-engineered electric eels that he fell into while repairing said power line. The most distinct change in this iteration is perhaps the choice to make Electro blue from head to toe. This change immediately separates him from other people, and it becomes impossible for him to blend in with the crowd. From that point on, he would be unable to hide his identity, and this only strengthened his feelings of being an outsider and a nobody. Electro also idolizes Spider-Man in this version, or at least he does until Spider-Man stops him from charging up in Times Square. Electro is temporarily captured and studied until Harry Osborn Dane Dehaan, another major character in the Spider-Man universe, helps him to break out of containment and gives Electro a suit to control his powers in exchange for his aid in infiltrating Oscorp, but he is once again stopped from taking New York City's electricity by Spider-Man with the help of Gwen Stacy Emma Stone. Image via Sony The 2014 movie iteration of Electro is perhaps the most important when it comes to the latest in the Tom Holland saga of Spider-Man movies. In the newest trailer for Spider-Man No Way Home, viewers can see multiple shots of Electro, once again played by Foxx. However, there is one critical difference the lightning he is shooting out is a bright yellow reminiscent of the other depictions of Electro. In addition, shots of Electro show that he doesn't look mutated, unlike the version we see in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Instead, Electro takes on a more muted look and seems to be wearing a mechanical suit. So, what does this mean for the electricity-spewing villain? We already know that Spider-Man No Way Home has to deal with different universes. So, there is likely a chance that this Electro isn't necessarily from the same universe that contains Andrew Garfield's iteration of Spider-Man. Regardless of the answer, we see a lot of him in this trailer when compared to other villains like Sandman and The Lizard, meaning there's a good chance he has a larger role to play overall. Other scenes from the trailer depict Electro fighting Spider-Man one on one, and an audio clip of him saying "you're not gonna take this away from me" can also be heard. In one of the final scenes, viewers can see Electro amongst other Spider-Man villains such as the aforementioned Sandman and The Lizard. C'est lui qui est le plus impressionnant à l'écran, lui qui participe aux scènes d'action les plus dynamiques, lui qui est incarné par Jamie Foxx, tête d'affiche du casting. Le parti pris du film pour ce personnage est assez révélateur de ce qui semble être l'essence de cette nouvelle franchise. Mais commençons par le commencement qui est Electro ? Si l'on prend la version classique, Electro est un adversaire de Spidey créé vers 1964. Comme tous les personnages appartenant à cette époque, il a un look très... daté, pour rester poli. Combinaison moulante verte décorée d'éclairs jaunes y compris sur son masque, une adaptation physique nous donnerait un look presque plus ridicule que le Riddler de Batman Forever. Impensable pour 2014. Multivers et nostalgie que veut dire le retour d’Electro dans Spider-Man 3 ? Forme moderne Côté physique, Sony s'est assuré que le courant passe en piochant dans sa version la plus moderne, directement inspirée de l'univers Ultimate en gros, l'univers Marvel réactualisé dans les années 2000, sorte de reboot total version bd un type à la peau bleue phosphorescente, qui n'a évidemment pas de "costume" ringard, tout au plus un ensemble noir après son évasion. Cela semble être une évidence aujourd'hui mais rappelons-nous qu'un Sam Raimi assumait le côté classique et carrément kitsch, avec entre autres l'Homme-Sable et son légendaire pull rayé dans Spider Man 3. Attention, il ne s'agit pas d'opposer arbitrairement les deux sagas pour distribuer bons et mauvais points, mais de noter les différences d’approche de l'univers de l'Araignée. L'autre particularité de Webb, c'est de s'appuyer sur l'héritage des super-films qui sont passés avant lui, sans aucun complexe. Ainsi son Dillon après métamorphose emprunte autant à l'embarrassant Freeze incarné par Schwarzenegger qu'au Docteur Manhattan de Watchmen. Du coup, ça passe ou ça casse cette ressemblance consciente ou non a provoqué certaines railleries pudique, Max se "crée" une sorte de caleçon sorti de nulle part lorsqu'il se libère. A l'instar de Heimdall Thor ou Perry White Man of Steel, Electro n’est à la base pas Noir, mais vue sa transformation, personne n'en a rien à cirer et on est heureusement passé à côté d'un énième débat sur le changement de couleur de la bd à l'écran. Concernant ses pouvoirs et leurs origines, le film reste traditionnel, les précédentes versions n'ayant de toutes façons jamais vraiment innové sur ce point accident impliquant de l'électricité d'une façon ou d'une autre, et basta. Dillon se retrouve doté de la capacité de contrôler, absorber, concentrer et projeter de l'électricité, tout en pouvant lui-même prendre la poudre d'escampette en passant par n'importe quel conducteur adapté du fil électrique au réseau high tech. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 se prend les pieds dans la toile critique Fond d'origine Sur le fond, il est assez intéressant de voir que le script pioche en réalité dans la version d'origine du personnage et non celle d'Ultimate où il est un criminel avant sa métamorphose. Le film nous présente un Electro qui, dans le civil, était un homme insignifiant, peu sûr de lui et très seul. Un background qui renvoie à ses premières apparitions, où son caractère s'expliquait par un père absent, une mère trop protectrice, des déménagements successifs et un divorce. De cette proximité avec le méchant d'origine découle une autre particularité de The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Le film n'a pas le temps de développer les causes de la détresse de Max, qu'on présente en 3 scènes comme un gentil névrosé caricatural et cartoonesque le combo crane dégarni, vêtements anonymes et regard ahuri derrière ses lunettes n'est pas là pour rien. Une fois changé en Electro, c'est pareil, la scène où il bascule du côté obscur aurait pu appuyer le côté tragique de la bête de foire dépassée par ses pouvoirs, mais il n'en est rien en un faux mouvement, il électrocute Spidey, puis l'admiration qu'il lui vouait se mue en jalousie quand il constate que c'est le justicier qui attire les caméras. En clair, Electro n'est pas là pour nous faire de la peine on n'est pas chez les freaks de Tim Burton ni pour faire peur la façon de filmer ses "meurtres" reste soft mais pour divertir petits et grands, un point c'est tout. Ses motivations sont d’ailleurs assez basiques "Je vais contrôler l'électricité de New York comme ça les gens dépendront de moi et me vénéreront comme un dieu"... On est loin du côté purement crapuleux de la bd, où il est le plus souvent attiré par l'argent. En réalité, Electro symbolise à lui seul la direction prise par la saga Amazing Spider-Man, et probablement ses spin-off. Ni nemesis sanguinaire à la Nolan ni bad guy second degré façon Loki, il est résolument là pour le spectacle, et suffisamment marqué physiquement voix comprise pour qu'on le retienne. Que ce soit un bon ou un mauvais souvenir, à chacun de voir. Le personnage manque de consistance mais permet un rapprochement facile avec les autres super-méchants la scène de l'alliance avec Osborn fait pour le coup très comics niveau dialogues, et si cela reste un défaut dans certaines scènes, il fallait au moins ça pour lancer les Sinister Sar Note Depuis, le projet de réunion des super-méchants dans un film Sinister Six est tombé à l'eau, et c'est donc dans une nouvelle version de Spider-Man, à présent incarné par Tom Holland, qu'on retrouve Electro au cinéma. The latest Spider-Man movie gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe a taste of the Multiverse. In the film, Peter Parker Tom Holland asks Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch for help after the world learns he's secretly Spider-Man. However, Doctor Strange's memory wipe spell goes wrong when Peter Parker meddles with it. Due to the enchantment's failure, beings from other universes enter the MCU, and the entire Multiverse could be at stake. After the spell backfires, several notable Spider-Man villains make their way into the MCU. Tom Holland's Peter Parker first faces villains from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films. These include Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin isn't far behind him. The film also brings in villains from Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man movies. Jamie Foxx's Electro joins the film, sporting a new look and seeking the boosted power available in the MCU. Additionally, Rhys Ifans' Lizard makes an appearance and is still obsessed with turning everyone into reptiles. There are several Marvel plot holes in Spider-Man No Way Home, but a supposed goof involving Electro isn't one of them. In No Way Home, Electro looks more like Jamie Foxx than the character's original disheveled look in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He also gets an updated yellow color for his electricity instead of his previous blue. Since the other villains mostly look the same, fans have seen Electro's vastly different looks as a plot hole. However, Marvel may have already explained the change with Jamie Foxx's character. Getting new powers often changes heroes in Marvel movies, and Electro is experiencing that in No Way Home. In Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films, his version of Peter Parker becomes visibly stronger and loses the need for glasses shortly after receiving his powers. Along the same lines, Chris Evans' Captain America goes from a scrawny person to a hulking superhero after receiving the Super Soldier Serum in Captain America The First Avenger. That different power likely led to Electro's changed looks, and past Marvel films set a precedent. Additionally, entering the MCU changes most of the villains. Jamie Foxx's character changes drastically, losing his bad teeth and comb-over due to the new universe. Still, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock has a slightly different look with an updated hairstyle as well.
